BUYING NEW TIRES

When to Replace Your Tires

A tire’s lifespan varies based on design, driving habits, climate, road conditions and how carefully they’ve been maintained. With so many variables, it’s no surprise there’s no set timeframe for how long a tire lasts. However, there are a few milestones to keep in mind.

5 Years

At your tire’s five-year mark, begin getting it inspected annually by a professional.

10 Years

If you properly care for your tires, they may last a full 10 years. After 10 years, manufacturers recommend replacing your tires, even if they still look okay on the surface. Don’t forget about your spare tires either. The 10-year rule applies to them as well.

Not sure when your tires were manufactured? You can find the date by checking the DOT number on your sidewall. Reading the DOT number can be tricky. Visit our FAQ page to find out how.

Finding the Right Tires

When choosing a tire, the options can seem overwhelming. But in reality, there are only a handful of tires that are right for you. By asking the right questions, you can quickly narrow down your search. Here’s what to consider when buying a new tire:

  • Weather
Do you drive in an area that’s hot, cold, snowy, wet or dry? Maybe it’s all of the above. You may need to swap your tires from one season to next rather than driving on the same tire year-round.
  • Road Conditions
Do you drive mostly on city streets, highways or off-road? Different roads affect things like how often you start and stop and how long you brake.
  • Driving Style
Some drivers want a quiet, comfortable ride while others prefer to feel every curve. There are tire options for both.

Tire Buying Tips

  1. Take your time.
Do your research and find a dealer that will help you get the best tire.
  2. Never buy used tires.
You never know what they’ve been through and what sort of damages exist below the surface.
  3. Don’t mix tire brands.
Different tires perform and wear differently. Therefore, having a combination of tires could cause handling issues.
  4. If you only replace two tires, place them on the back of your vehicle.
The tires with the deepest tread should be on the rear axle to improve handling and stability as well as wet grip.
  5. Check your warranty before buying new tires.
All Uniroyal tires are covered for defects for the life of the original tread or up to six years from the date of the original purchase—whichever comes first.
  6. Ask questions.
A Uniroyal dealer is always available to help you with expert tire advice. Just ask!
